EXAM The USMLEs a computer-based standardized examination that assesses whether a physician candidate has the requisite knowledge and skills needed to begin residency training The USMLE Step 1 exam is the first of three such exams which are administered in order by medical students after their second year of study The other two tests are Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS which are both taken in the third year of medical school A pass on all three exams is required to become a licensed physician in the United States
